Azerbaijan Hosts Global South NGO Conference Focused on Neocolonialism
On May 14, 2026, Baku hosted the first General Assembly of the Global South NGOs Platform, an initiative established during COP29 in 2024. The platform, now comprising over 650 NGOs from 116 countries, aims to bridge the Global North and South. During the assembly, Azerbaijani researcher Fuad Karimli was elected as General-Secretary for a five-year term. Azerbaijani Presidential Aide Hikmat Hajiyev delivered the opening speech, asserting Azerbaijan's identity as part of the Global South and condemning ongoing neocolonialism. He specifically criticized the current structure of international institutions, particularly the UN Security Council, for failing to reflect modern realities or ensure equitable geographic representation. However, the article notes that Azerbaijan's anti-colonial rhetoric is selective, primarily targeting France due to its support for Armenia and criticism of Baku's authoritarianism. This event aligns with Azerbaijan's broader strategy to court Global South nations and position itself as a regional power between East and West, despite domestic repression of civil society.
