Australian Paralympian Christie Dawes Retires After Three-Decade Career

Christie Dawes, a celebrated Australian wheelchair racer, has announced her retirement from professional competition after a career spanning more than three decades. The 46-year-old athlete will compete in her final race at the upcoming Cape Town Marathon in South Africa. Dawes represented Australia at seven Paralympic Games, winning medals in London 2012, Rio 2016, and Beijing 2008, alongside numerous world championships and Commonwealth Games appearances. She reflected on the evolution of disability sports, noting significant improvements in athlete support and accommodation compared to the early days of her career. Dawes emphasized the strong sense of community within marathon racing, particularly highlighting the solidarity shown after the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings. Citing natural physical changes associated with aging as the primary reason for her decision, she stated that her body no longer recovers as efficiently. Looking forward, Dawes does not plan to pursue coaching but aims to continue her media work with ABC Radio NSW. She advised current athletes to maintain a 'Plan B' and develop interests outside of sport to ensure long-term personal balance and security beyond their athletic careers.
