Australia and Norway Sign MoU for Domestic Missile Manufacturing
The Australian Government has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Norway to enhance the acquisition and domestic manufacturing of missiles within Australia. This strategic agreement facilitates information sharing and collaboration among Australia, Norway, and ten other nations utilizing the Naval Strike Missile and Joint Strike Missile, both developed by the Norwegian defense company KONGSBERG. The initiative aims to establish Australia as a regional missile production hub, aligning with the 2026 National Defence Strategy and the 2024 Australian Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance Plan. To support this effort, the government is investing up to $850 million to enable local manufacturing and maintenance of these missile systems and their priority components. A key component of this investment is the construction of a new missile factory in Newcastle, scheduled to begin production for the Australian Defence Force and partner nations by 2027. This development is part of a broader $36 billion decade-long investment under the 2026 Integrated Investment Program, designed to accelerate the production of longer-range munitions in Australia.
