Arctic Ice Shrinkage Accelerates, Forcing Researchers to Revise Forecast
New analysis of satellite imagery from 2025 and early 2026 reveals that Arctic sea ice loss has accelerated sharply, reversing a temporary slowdown observed in the early 2020s. Researchers led by Duo Chan at the University of Southampton found that during the 2024/2025 growth phase, ice extent dropped by 0.72 million square kilometers—more than twice the area of Germany—and by 0.93 million square kilometers during the maximum phase, both record declines since satellite monitoring began in 1978. The following winter saw further losses, with the growth phase hitting a negative record of 11.3 million square kilometers. The study, published in PNAS, attributes the abrupt decline to a 2.8°C regional temperature rise above pre-industrial levels, concluding that the earlier perceived slowdown was merely natural variability masking a long-term trend. The findings underscore that Arctic sea ice continues to shrink in a warming climate, contradicting any notion of a sustained pause in ice loss.
