Antarctic Ice Reveals Earth Traveling Through Ancient Supernova Debris
Scientists from the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf have discovered evidence that Earth is currently moving through a cloud of ancient stellar debris. By analyzing Antarctic ice cores dating back 40,000 to 80,000 years, researchers detected traces of iron-60, a rare radioactive isotope created during supernova explosions. This finding confirms that the Local Interstellar Cloud, which surrounds our Solar System, contains material from a long-ago exploding star. The study, published in Physical Review Letters, indicates that the concentration of this cosmic ash has varied over time, suggesting density variations within the cloud or changes in Earth's position relative to it. Previously, the source of iron-60 found in younger samples was uncertain, but these older ice samples strongly point to the interstellar cloud as the origin. This discovery provides a new method for studying the history and structure of our galactic neighborhood, offering insights into how ancient stellar events have shaped the environment through which our Solar System travels.
