UK PM Andy Burnham Unveils Major Schools Reform Prioritizing Technical Education Over University Route

UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to announce the largest education overhaul in 15 years, shifting focus away from the traditional university pathway toward technical education. The plan allows 14-year-olds (Year 10) to combine core academics with technical skills, work experience, and local employer links. Regional mayors, schools, and businesses will collaborate to shape these pathways. The reforms are funded by £570 million already allocated for college places and a £4.7 billion schools funding increase from the 2025 Spending Review. The initiative aims to address a crisis of over one million young people not in education, employment, or training (NEETs), as highlighted by Alan Milburn's interim report. Burnham, distancing himself from New Labour's 50% university target, emphasizes parity between academic and technical routes. The plan has drawn support from unions and small business groups, but Conservative shadow education secretary Laura Trott criticized it as insufficient to undo Labour's damage to the job market.
