Although Prime Minister Starmer is not expected to block Burnham’s candidacy, approval from Labour’s National Executive Committee remains uncertain. The political turmoil is further compounded by the recent resignation of Health Secretary Wes Streeting, who criticized the current leadership as unprincipled. Burnham argues that national politics requires the same transformative approach applied in Greater Manchester to improve affordability and governance. If successful in the by-election, Burnham would position himself to contest the Labour leadership, potentially replacing Starmer. The Makerfield constituency, a traditional Labour stronghold, now faces potential threats from Reform UK, reflecting broader shifts in the political landscape following recent local election results.
