Jeff Grattis, head of Amazon Games, stated that the creative team is actively exploring new concepts that honor J.R.R. Tolkien’s world. The canceled MMO, developed in partnership with rights holder Embracer Group, was reportedly in early pre-production with minimal staff before being shelved amid broader company layoffs in October 2025. This marks Amazon's second failed attempt at a Middle-earth MMO, following a previous collaboration with Leyou that ended in 2021 due to corporate acquisition issues. Meanwhile, Embracer Group is fostering a renaissance for the franchise by supporting other developers, including Warhorse Studios and Crystal Dynamics, who are reportedly creating their own Lord of the Rings titles.
