All Hondius Evacuees in Netherlands Test Negative for Hantavirus
The Dutch public health institute RIVM has confirmed that all passengers repatriated to the Netherlands from the cruise ship Hondius have tested negative for hantavirus. This includes 26 individuals who arrived on recent flights to Eindhoven, as well as 26 earlier arrivals, bringing the total number of evacuees to 122. Despite the negative test results, authorities mandate that all repatriated passengers complete a six-week home quarantine, which commenced on May 6, and undergo weekly retesting. The evacuation follows a deadly hantavirus outbreak during a South Atlantic cruise that resulted in three fatalities, including two Dutch nationals. Samples were analyzed by the RIVM and Erasmus MC in Rotterdam. Health officials emphasize that the risk to the general public in the Netherlands remains very low. Furthermore, the World Health Organization has stated that the virus is highly unlikely to trigger a pandemic similar to Covid-19. The situation is being closely monitored, but current data suggests contained transmission risks among the evacuated group.
