Alabama Women Plead Guilty to Federal Assault Charges After Cruise Ship Brawl

Two women from Alabama have pleaded guilty to federal assault charges following a physical altercation aboard a Carnival cruise ship returning from the Bahamas. The incident occurred in March on the Carnival Spirit, which had departed from Mobile, Alabama. According to FBI interviews, the dispute began when Tonya Nelson, 58, approached Lisa Horace, 51, and her husband at Guest Services to inform them they were standing in a line reserved for elite loyalty program members. Tensions escalated after Nelson allegedly tapped Horace’s husband on the shoulder, leading to threats and a physical fight involving slapping and kicking. No serious injuries were reported. Because the altercation took place in international waters, the FBI handled the investigation. Both women appeared in federal court in Mobile, where adjudication was withheld pending three months of good behavior. If they remain crime-free and avoid contact, charges will be dismissed. Additionally, both women have been banned from all Carnival cruises and stripped of their Diamond VIFP loyalty status, a significant penalty given the time and cost required to achieve that tier. Carnival provided surveillance footage confirming the incident but has not publicly commented on the legal proceedings.
