Accompong Electoral Committee Defies Supreme Court Injunction, Proceeds with Nominations

The Accompong Electoral Committee in Jamaica has announced it will proceed with scheduled nomination day activities despite a Supreme Court injunction ordering a halt to the election process. Justice N Hart-Hines had granted an interim injunction staying both nomination and election activities until June 2026, following a legal challenge by Meredith Rowe, a former colonel and prospective candidate. Rowe alleged that current leadership, specifically Colonel Richard Currie, was manipulating rules and failing to finalize the voters' list. However, the Electoral Committee and the Full Maroon Council rejected the court's authority, citing the sovereign status of the Maroon community under their 2022 Constitution. They argued that subjecting their internal electoral traditions to external jurisdiction dishonors their ancestors' struggle for self-determination. The committee also questioned Rowe's eligibility due to residency requirements. Based on advice from legal counsel, the committee determined that the nominations scheduled for May 15, 2026, would continue as planned, asserting their right to autonomous governance.
