Qatar Airways Ordered to Pay ₹10 Lakh to Kannur Family for Denying Boarding to Minors
The Ernakulam District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Kerala, India, has ordered Qatar Airways to pay ₹10 lakh in compensation and ₹25,000 in litigation costs to a Kannur family. The family, including expatriates Roshan Jose and Vinaya, were returning from Kochi to Italy via Doha in December 2018 when the airline denied boarding to their two minor sons. The elder son (aged 6) was refused boarding at Kochi due to an alleged visa issue, and the infant son (aged 10 months) was later denied boarding at Doha despite having a boarding pass. The parents had to obtain fresh travel documents and transport the children separately to Italy, causing emotional distress and additional expenses. The commission ruled the airline's actions were arbitrary, inconsistent, and constituted deficiency in service and unfair trade practice.
