Chinese artificial intelligence startup Zhipu AI has announced a strategic investment of RMB 1 billion ($140 million) from Shanghai-based state funds, specifically Pudong VC and Zhangjiang Group. The announcement was made during the company's ecosystem conference on July 2, marking a significant step toward its planned initial public offering (IPO), for which counseling began in April. With this latest infusion, Zhipu has raised over RMB 10 billion ($1.4 billion) in total funding, achieving a valuation exceeding RMB 20 billion ($2.79 billion). Founded in 2019 and backed by Tsinghua University, Zhipu is recognized as China’s first startup to release a proprietary large language model.
