Xunlei Acquires Male-Focused Sports Community Hupu for RMB 500 Million
Chinese cloud service provider Xunlei has successfully completed the acquisition of Hupu, a leading male-oriented online sports and lifestyle community in China, for a total consideration of RMB 500 million (approximately $69 million). The transaction was executed through the purchase of Shanghai Kuanghui Network Technology, the entity operating Hupu. Under the agreed terms, Xunlei paid RMB 400 million in cash prior to closing, with the remaining RMB 100 million scheduled to be paid in two equal installments over the subsequent 24 months. Founded in 2004, Hupu initially started as a basketball news site before expanding its coverage to include football, esports, fitness, and pop culture, cultivating a dedicated user base among young men. This acquisition marks a significant strategic move for Hupu following two unsuccessful attempts to go public due to financial irregularities and advisory terminations between 2016 and 2021. For Xunlei, listed on Nasdaq since 2014, this deal aligns with its recent pivot from file-downloading software toward cloud acceleration, distributed computing, and digital entertainment sectors, leveraging Hupu's engaged community to enhance its digital ecosystem.
