World Aquatics Lifts Flag and Anthem Bans for Russian and Belarusian Swimmers

World Aquatics has officially lifted restrictions prohibiting Russian and Belarusian athletes from competing under their national flags and anthems in international swimming events. This decision, announced on April 13, 2026, marks a significant easing of sanctions imposed following Russia's 2022 invasion of Ukraine. Previously, athletes from these nations were required to compete as neutrals. Under the new guidelines, senior athletes with Russian or Belarusian sport nationality will be treated equally to other competitors, allowed to wear national uniforms and have their flags and anthems recognized. However, participation remains conditional on passing at least four consecutive anti-doping controls. World Aquatics President Husain al-Musallam emphasized the goal of maintaining peaceful competition across all nations. This move aligns with the International Paralympic Committee's recent decision to allow similar participation at the 2026 Winter Paralympics in Milan-Cortina, despite objections from Italy and a boycott by Ukraine. The next World Swimming Championships are scheduled for Budapest in 2027, where these changes will likely be implemented.
