Wild Gaur Captured in Kannur and Released into Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary

A wild gaur that strayed into densely populated areas near Thalassery in Kannur district was successfully captured and released into the Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary. The animal had wandered approximately 13.5 kilometers from forested regions into residential zones, including Eranholi and private properties in Vadakumbad, posing safety concerns for locals. After monitoring the gaur's movements for two days, the Forest Department obtained special permission from the Chief Wildlife Warden to intervene. On May 8, a specialized team led by Kottur Range Officer Nithin Raj T and veterinary expert Ilyas Rawuthar executed a chemical immobilization operation behind the Thalassery Institute of Advanced Studies. Following the capture, the gaur was transported in a special vehicle to the sanctuary. Officials confirmed the animal's health was satisfactory before its release. The operation involved coordination between forest staff, the Rapid Response Team, police personnel, and local volunteers, highlighting effective inter-agency cooperation in wildlife management and public safety.
