Vizhinjam Port Records Historic Cargo Growth Amid Global Shipping Disruptions

The Vizhinjam International Seaport in Kerala, India, achieved record-breaking performance during its inaugural financial year, processing nearly 1.3 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) of cargo. This figure significantly surpassed the projected annual capacity of one million TEUs. The surge in activity was largely driven by global shipping disruptions stemming from the Hormuz crisis and broader West Asian conflicts, which redirected maritime traffic. The port recorded its highest vessel berthing numbers, accommodating 61 vessels and transshipping 118,000 TEUs. Developed by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (APSEZ) in partnership with the Kerala government, Vizhinjam is India’s first semi-automated and technologically advanced deepwater multipurpose seaport. Despite this success, the port faced limitations due to infrastructure delays, forcing authorities to decline some shipping line requests during peak demand periods. Consequently, while the geopolitical crisis provided an unexpected boost, the port could not fully capitalize on the entire potential of the growing global maritime industry. This milestone establishes a new benchmark for the facility, highlighting both its strategic importance and the urgent need for further infrastructure augmentation to handle future volumes effectively.
