James Thain, a veteran network architect, has submitted an Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) draft proposing Internet Protocol Version 8 (IPv8). This new protocol aims to resolve IPv4 address exhaustion by introducing an ASN-based 'area code' system, effectively expanding the available address space to approximately 30 trillion unique addresses. Unlike IPv6, which requires significant infrastructure upgrades and migration efforts, IPv8 is designed to be 100 percent backward compatible with existing IPv4 devices and applications. Thain argues that IPv6 offers limited return on investment for most organizations compared to hyperscalers, making IPv8 a more practical solution for general network operators.
