Vector Researcher Bo Wang Develops Tool to Track Genetic Evolution of COVID-19
A team of researchers, led by Vector Institute Faculty Member Bo Wang, has developed the COVID-19 Genotyping Tool (CGT), an AI-enabled web application designed to track the viral genome evolution of SARS-CoV-2. Published in The Lancet Digital Health, this tool allows scientists to analyze publicly available viral genomes and securely upload private sequencing data for comparative analysis. By monitoring mutations as the virus spreads, CGT provides critical insights into transmission histories, outbreak origins, and evolutionary trends. This understanding is vital for informing vaccine design, drug development, and public health strategies. Co-developed with PhD student Hassaan Maan and collaborators from McMaster University and Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, the user-friendly platform helps local health officials contextualize regional events within the global pandemic landscape. According to Wang, who also serves as AI Lead at the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre, the tool enables policymakers to shape local health responses and alert communities to significant changes in viral evolution, thereby enhancing efforts to control the ongoing pandemic.
