Vector Institute Researcher Co-Develops AI Tool for COVID-19 Variant Identification
Researchers, including Bo Wang from the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, have developed an advanced AI-enabled genotyping tool capable of analyzing viral genome data obtained from nasal swabs. This innovative technology is specifically designed to identify different Variants of Concern (VOC) of COVID-19 with high efficiency. The tool was created in collaboration with DNAStack, an Ontario-based technology company, and is part of the Viral AI network supported by the federal COVID Cloud Supercluster Project. Unlike traditional centralized models, this system utilizes a federated architecture that allows for the connection, analysis, and sharing of data without moving it from its source. This approach ensures faster processing, regulatory compliance, and regionally sovereign data management. Currently, the Province of Ontario is partnering with DNAStack to establish a database and real-time visualization platform for genomic data, aiming to enhance public health officials' capacity to track variants and improve pandemic response planning. While the current application focuses on COVID-19, the developers note that the machine learning framework can be repurposed to analyze other viruses, such as the common flu, demonstrating its broader potential in epidemiological surveillance and public health infrastructure.
