The Vector Institute, in partnership with Deloitte Canada, has released its first annual Ontario AI Snapshot, providing a comprehensive baseline for the province's artificial intelligence ecosystem. The report, covering the 2019-20 period, validates the hypothesis that accumulating AI talent drives investment and commercialization. Key findings indicate a robust ecosystem characterized by the expansion of Vector’s research community to over 500 researchers and the enrollment of more than 1,000 master’s students in AI programs across Ontario. The sector created an estimated 3,683 new AI jobs while retaining over 16,000 existing positions. Financially, the ecosystem attracted $1.9 billion in venture capital investment, with R&D spending ranging between $97 million and $824 million. Additionally, 32 new AI companies were established, and 53 percent of surveyed Ontario companies reported commercializing AI products or services.
