The Vector Institute, a leading Canadian artificial intelligence research organization, has announced the launch of its second Pathfinder Project aimed at integrating AI into the healthcare sector. In partnership with the University Health Network (UHN) and the University of Waterloo, this initiative focuses on enhancing radiology diagnoses through machine learning. The project aims to upgrade Coral Review, a peer learning tool developed at UHN, by incorporating an algorithm created by Dr. H.R. Tizhoosh from the University of Waterloo’s Kimia Lab. This AI-enabled system will scan thousands of existing medical images, such as x-rays, to identify cases similar to a current patient’s condition and recommend diagnoses to physicians. By addressing the limitations of human availability for second opinions, the technology seeks to provide clinicians with critical information, particularly for rare or difficult-to-detect cases. As part of the Pathfinder series, this small-scale effort is designed to yield results within 12 to 18 months, guiding future adoption of AI in healthcare and translating advanced machine learning research into tangible benefits for patients across Canada.
