Vector Institute Launches Program to Help Businesses Mitigate AI Bias
The Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence, supported by the National Research Council of Canada Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP), launched an online initiative titled 'Bias in AI.' This program aims to assist Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in identifying and reducing bias within natural language processing (NLP) and computer vision applications. Recognizing that SMEs often lack resources for advanced AI governance, the five-week course combined technical training with ethical and business considerations. Eighteen participants from six companies, including Armilla and EthicalAI, engaged in workshops and practical assignments. These involved training models like GPT2/BERT, analyzing bias factors, and developing classification models. Participants applied these skills to real-world business challenges, such as ensuring fairness in HR promotion systems and creating synthetic data for balanced datasets. The initiative highlights the complexity of AI bias, emphasizing that it requires not just technical correction but also robust governance and an understanding of ethical principles. By integrating these dimensions, the program helps data science teams stay current with best practices, ultimately protecting organizations from reputational damage and unjust outcomes associated with biased AI systems.
