Vector Institute Launches Internship Program for African Machine Learning Students
The Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence has launched a specialized internship program for students from the African Master’s in Machine Intelligence (AMMI) program. This initiative aims to bridge the gap in AI education and opportunities on the continent by providing hands-on research experience at Vector. Six students from the inaugural AMMI cohort, including Fadel Thior and Aisha Alaagib, were selected for internships under the supervision of Vector faculty members. The AMMI program, directed by Moustapha Cisse and supported by Vector Research Director Richard Zemel, offers intensive training to top African talent. Despite challenges such as limited digital connectivity and regulatory frameworks, the program highlights the growing potential of AI in Africa. Participants reported rapid skill acquisition and exposure to advanced topics like natural language processing and multi-modal representation learning. The collaboration between Vector, the University of Toronto, and AIMS in Rwanda seeks to integrate African researchers into the global AI community, addressing the lack of local graduate pipelines and fostering innovation in the region's tech sector.
