Vector Institute Hosts 2018 Deep Learning and Reinforcement Learning Summer School in Toronto
The Vector Institute, in partnership with CIFAR, Amii, and Mila, hosted the 2018 Deep Learning and Reinforcement Learning Summer School in Toronto from July 25 to August 3. Held at the Rotman School of Management, this marked the first time the event took place in Toronto and was the largest to date, attracting over 250 selected attendees from 20 countries out of 1,200 global applicants. The program featured lectures by distinguished researchers from leading institutions such as MIT, Stanford, and Google, alongside student poster presentations. A specialized session focused on AI applications in healthcare, discussing impacts in psychiatry, diagnostics, and patient monitoring. The event concluded with the Vector Institute’s AI Job and Data Fair, which drew approximately 500 participants and featured thirty industry booths from sectors including finance, technology, and health. This fair aimed to connect students with real-world data problems and recruitment opportunities, highlighted by sponsored networking lunches with major corporations like Microsoft Research and TD Bank. The summer school served as a pivotal platform for knowledge sharing, networking, and bridging academic research with industrial application within the Canadian AI ecosystem.
