VCK Intensifies Campaign to Counter PMK in Kattumannarkoil Election

In the lead-up to the 2026 Tamil Nadu elections, the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) is aggressively campaigning in the Kattumannarkoil Assembly constituency to maintain its dominance against the Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK). The contest is characterized by a tight balance of caste dynamics, with Adi Dravidar and Muslim voters largely supporting the DMK alliance, while Vanniyars consolidate behind the AIADMK front. VCK president Thol. Thirumavalavan withdrew from the race, leading to the nomination of L.E. Jothimani, son of late Congress leader L. Elayaperumal. Although Jothimani leverages his father's legacy, party insiders note a lack of the electric enthusiasm Thirumavalavan typically generates. The VCK faces internal challenges regarding its association with Agriculture Minister M.R.K. Panneerselvam, whose Vanniyar identity causes unease among some Dalit voters. Meanwhile, the PMK, despite deep local roots and candidate Anbu Cholan, struggles with internal leadership rifts and shifting caste equations that have weakened its performance since 2011. The outcome hinges on effective mobilization of the significant Dalit electorate, which comprises nearly 40% of voters in this reserved constituency.
