University of Vermont professor Richard Single is conducting a comprehensive survey to gather population-level data on the impact of F-35 fighter jet noise on residents in Williston and surrounding communities near Burlington International Airport. While decibel monitors indicate noise levels often exceed limits compatible with residential areas, there has been a lack of systematic data on how this affects daily life. The survey, which has collected approximately 2,000 responses since mid-April, asks residents about disruptions to relaxation, communication, and outdoor activities. Single aims to quantify these disturbances and validate or challenge existing airport noise maps, which are currently based on flight radar rather than citizen input. Additionally, Single is designing a separate study using wearable technology to measure physiological stress responses, such as pulse rate variability, during flyovers. This secondary study was postponed due to the recent deployment of most Vermont Air National Guard F-35s to the Caribbean and Middle East, resulting in fewer local training flights.
