The University of Saskatchewan (USask) has announced the acquisition of Canada’s first full-stack, university-owned quantum computer, marking a significant milestone in national quantum research capabilities. Funded by a $1.93 million investment from Prairies Economic Development Canada and $400,000 from Innovation Saskatchewan, the system will be operated by the Centre for Quantum Topology and Its Applications (quanTA). This on-premises hardware, developed with partners including Rigetti Computing and Zero Point Cryogenics, allows for high-precision calculations essential for advancing fields such as drug development, agriculture, and defense. Unlike previous remote access methods, this installation provides researchers and students with direct, around-the-clock access to quantum technology, significantly enhancing research capacity and training opportunities. The initiative aligns with Canada’s National Quantum Strategy and strengthens USask’s position as a hub for quantum innovation.
