Two Children Killed, Five Injured After Cement Board Collapses in Karnataka

A tragic accident occurred in Bail Merched village, Manvi taluk, Raichur district, Karnataka, resulting in the deaths of two children and severe injuries to five others. The incident took place late on Friday night, April 17, 2026, when a heavy cement board arch from a community hall collapsed onto a group of spectators. The victims were attending an open-air traditional performance known as a Devi Drama. Strong winds, accompanied by a thunderstorm and lightning, were cited as the primary causes for the structural failure. The deceased have been identified as nine-year-old Vishwanath Ramalinga Naik and two-year-old Sanvita Peddayya Naik. Among the injured is Sanvita’s mother, Vishalakshi, who sustained injuries to her head and hand, along with four other local residents. All injured parties were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment. Local police have registered an unnatural death report following a complaint filed by the father of one of the deceased children. Authorities are treating the incident as accidental, highlighting the dangers posed by severe weather conditions to temporary or aging infrastructure in rural areas.
