Tribal Resistance Clashes with Administration Over Bauxite Mining in Odisha

Tensions have escalated in southern Odisha, India, as tribal villagers fiercely resist government and corporate efforts to establish bauxite mining operations on Sijimali hill. The conflict, spanning the Rayagada and Kalahandi districts, intensified following attempts to construct a 2.98-kilometer access road to the mining block. On April 7, 2026, the situation turned violent when police deployed tear gas to disperse protesters, resulting in injuries to several security personnel during counter-attacks by the community. Residents of the Kondh tribe, who view the hill as essential to their survival and cultural identity, have mobilized en masse, including women, children, and elders, to block construction vehicles.
