Tirupati Celebrates Gangamma Jatara, Honoring Feminine Power and Tradition

The annual Gangamma Jatara festival was celebrated in Tirupati on May 11, 2026, marking a significant cultural event dedicated to honoring feminine power and challenging patriarchal norms. Sri Ramyananda Bharathi Swamini, the pontiff of Sri Shakti Peetham, formally offered silk vastrams to the Tallapaka Pedda Gangamma and Thathayagunta Chinna Gangamma temples. She was received by temple chairperson Somu Vedavathi Royal and hailed Goddess Gangamma as the guardian of women. The festival is rooted in a 600-year-old folklore where Goddess Gangamma liberated women from a tyrannical local chieftain by disguising herself in various attires to lure and slay him. This legend inspires the contemporary tradition of devotees roaming the town in flamboyant and peculiar costumes. The event serves as both a religious observance and a celebration of female resilience and liberation, drawing attention to ancient traditions that continue to hold social and cultural relevance in the region.
