Thuringia 2025 Traffic Report: Rise in Accidents Involving Young and Senior Drivers

The Interior Ministry of Thuringia reported a 2.7 percent increase in traffic accidents in 2025, with nearly 52,000 incidents recorded by police. This rise marks a notable uptick from the previous year, driven primarily by higher involvement rates among young drivers and senior citizens. Interior Minister Georg Maier emphasized the need for targeted prevention, education, and stricter controls, urging older drivers to self-assess their physical fitness before driving. Despite the overall increase in accident frequency, the number of fatalities decreased slightly from 96 in 2024 to 93 in 2025. Additionally, accidents resulting in personal injuries dropped to 5,897. While alcohol-related crashes declined, incidents involving other intoxicants rose. The primary causes of accidents remained excessive speed, right-of-way violations, insufficient following distance, and errors during turning maneuvers. These statistics highlight a complex traffic safety landscape where improved survival rates coexist with a higher volume of collisions, particularly affecting specific demographic groups. Authorities are calling for renewed focus on driver competence and health awareness to mitigate these trends.
