Thanjavur Appoints Seven Panel Lawyers for Bonded Labour Cases

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) in Thanjavur has appointed seven panel lawyers to provide specialized legal aid to survivors of bonded labour and human trafficking. This marks the highest number of such appointments in a single district to date. The decision was driven by the significant volume of pending cases in the Delta region, where approximately 25 incidents have been recorded in recent years, and the specific expertise of the selected attorneys. These lawyers underwent specialized training provided by the International Justice Mission, a non-governmental organization instrumental in establishing the One-Stop Crisis Team (OSCT) under the Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority. The OSCT initiative aims to combat sex, organ, and labour trafficking across Tamil Nadu. The appointed lawyers will assist public prosecutors in expediting legal proceedings and supporting vulnerable survivors, many of whom are uneducated and unfamiliar with court procedures. Similar appointments have already been made in districts including Pudukkottai, Nagapattinam, and Tiruvallur. Legal experts emphasize that this specialized support is crucial for helping survivors recount events accurately during depositions and navigating the complex judicial process effectively.
