Tencent’s Penguin Island Phase One to Open in Shenzhen by Year-End
The Shenzhen Qianhai Development Zone has announced significant progress on Tencent’s new headquarters project, known as Penguin Island, located in the Dachan Bay area. The first phase of this massive development is scheduled for completion and opening by the end of the current year. Meanwhile, construction on the landmark central headquarters building, designed as four spiraling towers resembling a high-speed engine and named the Technology Engine, is set to commence in early 2025. Initiated in mid-2021 with an investment of RMB 31.9 billion ($4.47 billion), the project covers 809,000 square meters of land with a total built-up area of 2 million square meters. Upon full completion, expected in 2026, the campus will accommodate approximately 75,000 office staff. In addition to corporate offices, the site will feature public amenities such as a technology exhibition hall, cultural center, and sports center, all accessible to the general public. This development marks a major expansion for Tencent in Shenzhen, reinforcing its physical presence in the Qianhai cooperation zone while integrating community-focused facilities into its corporate infrastructure.
