TCL CSOT Unveils 0.01Hz Laptop Screen with Zone-Level Refresh Rate Control

At SID Display Week in Los Angeles, Chinese display manufacturer TCL CSOT demonstrated a new 14-inch laptop panel capable of an ultra-low 0.01Hz refresh rate, significantly surpassing existing 1Hz technologies. The screen utilizes Oxide TFT backplane technology and features twelve distinct zones that can independently adjust their refresh rates from 0.01Hz to 120Hz. This allows static content, such as browser windows, to consume minimal power while dynamic areas, like video playback, maintain smooth performance. TCL CSOT estimates this innovation could extend laptop video playback time by over an hour. Although the hardware is production-ready, widespread adoption depends on further collaboration with software and chip vendors like Microsoft, Intel, and AMD to fully enable the variable refresh rate switching. The company also showcased a trifold portable monitor and an upgraded 8K gaming monitor with a 1,200Hz refresh rate. This development highlights ongoing efforts in the tech industry to enhance energy efficiency in mobile computing devices through advanced display engineering.
