Tamil Nadu Forms 'Singappen' Special Task Force to Enhance Women's Safety

The Tamil Nadu State Government has officially ordered the formation of the 'Singappen' Special Task Force, a dedicated police unit equipped with modern facilities aimed at improving women's safety across the state. Announced by Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay immediately after his swearing-in, the initiative focuses on prevention and protection strategies as its sole objective. The task force will operate under the direct supervision of the Chief Minister, with a new Inspector General of Police position created to lead the unit. Key functions include identifying crime-prone locations, increasing police visibility in sensitive areas such as educational institutions and IT corridors, and providing rapid assistance to women in distress. The force will also coordinate with social welfare departments and NGOs to foster community awareness. While administrative sanctions for headquarters posts have been granted, discussions continue regarding uniform specifications and whether personnel will be recruited fresh or redeployed from existing staff.
