Tamil Nadu Begins Distribution of Voter Information Slips Ahead of 2026 Assembly Election

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has initiated the distribution of Voter Information Slips (VIS), commonly known as booth slips, across Tamil Nadu in preparation for the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled for April 23, 2026. This logistical operation involves Booth Level Officers conducting door-to-door visits to deliver slips to approximately 5.73 crore registered electors across the state's 38 districts. The VIS contains essential details such as the voter's personal information, polling station location, date and time of voting, a map snapshot, and a list of guidelines for poll day. Additionally, a QR code is included to facilitate faster verification of elector details, aiming to reduce crowding and expedite the voting process. The ECI explicitly stated that while these slips aid in identification, they are not valid standalone documents for casting votes. Unauthorized possession or distribution of these materials is punishable under the Representation of the People Act, 1951, and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. This initiative supports the electoral framework for selecting members for all 234 seats in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
