In a public statement, Fischer acknowledged this as a serious mistake, citing an extraordinary personal crisis where he wished to avoid vaccination while not wanting to let his team down by undergoing mandatory quarantine. Reports indicate he was fined nearly 39,000 Swiss francs in 2023 for document forgery after purchasing the fake certificate via social media. Despite the controversy emerging just before Switzerland hosts the upcoming World Championships, the Swiss Ice Hockey Federation considers the matter closed.
