Survivor Recounts 2003 Tel Aviv Mike's Place Suicide Bombing

Twenty-three years after the 2003 suicide bombing at Mike’s Place in Tel Aviv, survivor Yuval Tsemach provides a visceral account of the attack. On April 30, 2003, Tsemach was visiting the bar when British citizen Asif Muhammad Hanif detonated explosives, killing three people and injuring over 50. Tsemach describes the moment everything went dark and his subsequent shock as he navigated the debris-filled venue. He also witnessed the failed detonation of a second bomb by accomplice Omar Khan Sharif. Despite being in close proximity to the blast and finding flesh from the bomber on his shirt, Tsemach suffered only minor injuries, including singed eyelashes and light burns. The attack was claimed jointly by Hamas and the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigades. Tsemach later provided testimony to Israeli police and Scotland Yard, detailing the sensory experience of the explosion. This retrospective highlights the personal trauma and chaotic reality faced by survivors of terrorist attacks in Israel during the Second Intifada.
