Study Reveals Rising AI Substitution Potential in Thuringia's Workforce

A recent study by the Institute for Labor Market and Occupational Research (IAB) highlights the growing impact of artificial intelligence and digitalization on the labor market in Thuringia, Germany. The research indicates that the potential for job activities to be automated has risen significantly, from 41.6 percent in 2013 to 55.8 percent in 2022. Experts clarify that this statistic reflects a transformation in how work is performed rather than widespread job elimination. The analysis shows varied impacts across sectors: IT and scientific services face higher automation potential, while healthcare, education, and social services remain less susceptible due to the human-centric nature of their core tasks. Conversely, manufacturing and production roles, which are prevalent in Thuringia, exhibit high substitutability, pushing the region's average above the national German figure. The IAB emphasizes the urgent need for further training and upskilling in professions and regions with high digitalization potential.
