Study Finds No Detectable Adverse Health Effects from Wind Turbine Proximity
A new National Bureau of Economic Research working paper by Niklas Rott, Douglas Almond, and Osea Giuntella investigates the potential health impacts of living near wind turbines in the United States. Addressing persistent public concerns regarding noise exposure, sleep disturbances, and anxiety, the study analyzes longitudinal data from over 120,000 households between 2011 and 2023. By combining geolocated turbine data with survey responses and consumer purchasing records for sleep aids and painkillers, the researchers assessed various mental and physical health outcomes. The analysis compares household conditions before and after nearby turbine installations. Results indicate no detectable adverse health effects at typical exposure distances. While small effects cannot be entirely ruled out, the confidence intervals exclude moderate-to-large impacts, suggesting that fears of substantial health consequences are not supported by population-level evidence.
