Study: Amazonian Wildlife Feeds Millions and Supports Food Security
A landmark study published in Nature reveals the critical role of wild meat in the food security, nutrition, and cultural identity of approximately 11 million people across the Amazon rainforest. Drawing on over six decades of data from more than 600 communities, researchers mapped wild meat hunting scales for the first time. The findings indicate that while over 500 species are consumed, just 20 species account for the majority of the harvested biomass, with the lowland paca being the most common. Contrary to assumptions that high harvest volumes deplete wildlife, the study found that animal populations are most abundant in conserved forest areas within Indigenous and traditional territories. This suggests that traditional management systems, based on social reciprocity rather than mere resource extraction, are highly effective conservation strategies. The authors caution against externally imposed restrictions or replacing wild meat with farmed alternatives, arguing that such measures could undermine local autonomy and health. Instead, they advocate for protecting Indigenous land rights and recognizing traditional knowledge as legitimate tools for sustaining both ecosystem health and human livelihoods in the region.
