Strengthening Women's Role in Family-Based Peacebuilding in South Lebanon
Amidst ongoing displacement and economic hardship in South Lebanon, International Alert and UN Women have launched a family-centered peacebuilding initiative to address rising tensions and gender-based violence. Since late 2023, over 90,000 people, predominantly women and girls, have been displaced, straining family structures despite the November 2024 ceasefire. The project, implemented in Tyre and Abbassieh, engaged 198 community members, including 150 women and 48 men from Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian backgrounds. Utilizing the 'Transforming Family Dynamics' handbook, the initiative provided training on conflict resolution, gender equality, and non-violent communication. Following a successful pilot in September 2025, six workshops were held to help families navigate power relations and emotional boundaries. The program aims to empower women as mediators within households, complementing formal justice mechanisms. By fostering dialogue and transforming harmful norms, the initiative seeks to enhance social stability and prevent violence in a fragile post-conflict environment, offering a practical, context-sensitive approach to peacebuilding at the household level.
