Spectacular Demolition of La Coscia Viaduct on Grosseto-Siena Route
Anas, the Italian national road agency, successfully executed the controlled demolition of the La Coscia viaduct along the state road 223 di Paganico, connecting Grosseto and Siena. This operation is a critical component of Lot 4 in the broader infrastructure project aimed at doubling the roadway to four lanes. The demolition utilized explosives under the supervision of Anas, with technical execution by contractor ATI Itinera Monaco and specialized firm Nitrex. To ensure public safety, traffic on the affected stretch was halted in both directions for 45 minutes, from 6:30 to 7:15. The viaduct is scheduled for reconstruction as part of the modernization efforts, eventually serving as the lane directed towards Grosseto. Lot 4 encompasses a 2.8-kilometer section linking previously modernized segments between the Lampugnano and Civitella junctions in the province of Grosseto. The total investment for this lot amounts to 106 million euros. The comprehensive intervention includes the construction or adaptation of eight viaducts totaling 1.8 kilometers and two tunnels spanning 550 meters, significantly upgrading the E78 route's capacity and safety standards.
