Special Exhibition of Shinnyodo Temple Treasures Opens at Ryukoku Museum in Kyoto
The first-ever special exhibition dedicated to Kyoto’s ancient Shinnyodo Temple, titled “Masterpieces of Kyoto’s Shinnyodo,” has opened at the Ryukoku Museum. Running until June 14, 2026, the exhibition features approximately 100 cultural assets, including the National Treasure “Lotus Sutra” transcribed by the renowned Kamakura-period sculptor Unkei. Key displays include the “Shinnyodo Engi,” an important cultural property detailing the temple’s history, and various standing statues of Amida Buddha, such as one created by the In school sculptor Inren. Although the temple’s principal “Nodding Amida” image is not exhibited, replicas and related artifacts illustrate its significance. The collection also highlights Shinnyodo’s historical connection to the wealthy Mitsui merchant clan and features portraits of shogun Ashikaga Yoshiteru and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Organized by the Asahi Shimbun and others, this event aims to deepen public understanding of the Tendai sect temple founded in 984. Following the Kyoto showcase, a subsequent exhibition is scheduled for the Mitsui Memorial Museum in Tokyo from July to August.
