A special awareness programme focused on women’s safety and security was organized at prominent locations within the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi in the Vijayanagara district. The initiative, held on Monday, was led by the Department of Women and Child Development in collaboration with the Women Empowerment Unit, Akka Pade, and Vijaya Mahila Suraksha Pade teams. Officials and volunteers engaged with local residents and tourists near the Virupaksha Temple, Hampi Bazaar, and the bus stand to disseminate crucial information regarding safety measures and support systems. Key government schemes such as Mission Shakti, Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, and Sakhi One Stop Centres were explained by District Mission Coordinator Vidya and Gender Specialist Annapurna. Basheera B., Administrator of the Sakhi Centre, detailed the assistance available for women in distress. Participants were also informed about essential emergency helplines, including 181 for women, 112 for police, 1098 for children, and 1930 for cyber crimes. Additionally, awareness regarding the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act was raised. Team members actively interacted with female tourists, encouraging them to remain alert and confident while traveling, ensuring a safer environment for visitors and locals alike.
