Southern Railway Commissions New Solar Power Plants in Chennai Division

The Chennai Division of Southern Railway has successfully commissioned new solar power plants with a combined capacity of 140 KWP. These installations are located at St. Thomas Mount Railway Station, the Zonal Electric Traction Training Centre (ZETTC) in Avadi, the ZETTC Men’s Hostel, and Guindy Railway Station. The initiative was completed during the 2025–26 financial year, as announced in an official press release. The new solar infrastructure is projected to generate approximately 204,400 units of green energy annually. This shift towards renewable energy is expected to result in significant cost savings, estimated at ₹19.21 lakh per annum for the railway division. With these latest additions, the total installed solar capacity for the Chennai Division has reached 2,494.5 KWP. This development underscores Southern Railway's ongoing commitment to sustainable operations and energy efficiency within its network. By integrating solar power into key operational and residential facilities, the division aims to reduce its carbon footprint while optimizing operational expenditures. The move aligns with broader national efforts to increase the share of renewable energy in public infrastructure.
