Shanghai Jiao Tong University Launches World’s First Undergraduate Major in Embodied AI
Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) has officially launched what it claims is the world’s first undergraduate major dedicated to embodied artificial intelligence. Housed within the university’s School of Artificial Intelligence, this four-year program aims to address the critical shortage of hybrid technical talent required for China’s rapidly expanding humanoid robotics sector. The inaugural cohort will consist of 30 students who will pursue an engineering degree. The comprehensive curriculum is designed to cover the entire technological chain, ranging from perception and decision-making algorithms to control systems and physical robot design. To ensure practical relevance and industrial alignment, the program leverages SJTU’s internal research platforms and strategic partnerships with industry leaders. Notable collaborations include practice bases co-developed with Huawei and the National–Local Joint Innovation Center for Humanoid Robots.
