A new study published in the journal Psychology of Sport & Exercise reveals that listening to self-selected favorite music can significantly enhance physical endurance during high-intensity exercise. Conducted by researchers at the University of Jyväskylä, the study involved 29 recreationally active adults who performed cycling tests under two conditions: in silence and while listening to their preferred tracks, typically ranging from 120 to 140 beats per minute. Results showed that participants cycled for an average of 35.6 minutes with music, compared to 29.8 minutes in silence, representing a nearly 20% increase in endurance. Despite the extended duration and higher energy expenditure, participants reported similar levels of perceived exertion and exhibited comparable heart rate and lactate levels at exhaustion. Lead researcher Andrew Danso suggests that music helps individuals tolerate the 'pain zone' longer without increasing the subjective feeling of strain. This zero-cost strategy could improve training adherence, enhance fitness gains, and offer broader public health benefits by making intense exercise more manageable and enjoyable for both athletes and casual exercisers.
