A new study led by scientists at Florida International University reveals that seawater contaminating freshwater supplies is significantly raising blood pressure levels in coastal populations. Analyzing data from over 74,000 people across 27 studies, researchers found that exposure to high-salinity drinking water increases the risk of hypertension by 26 percent. This health risk is comparable to the dangers associated with a sedentary lifestyle. The issue is particularly acute in coastal areas where rising sea levels push saltwater into groundwater aquifers, affecting more than 3 billion people globally, especially in low and middle-income countries. Participants drinking saltier water showed average increases of 3.22 mmHg in systolic and 2.82 mmHg in diastolic blood pressure. While dietary salt remains the primary sodium source for most, this environmental factor adds unnoticed sodium intake through drinking and cooking. Experts warn that as climate change accelerates sea-level rise, this public health threat will intensify, contributing to higher rates of heart disease and stroke worldwide.
